There will only be two types of jobs in the future, meaningful jobs and meaningless jobs, according to Jesper Ek, Head of Sub region Nordics, Roche Diabetes Care.

Reduced stress makes room for reflection

Michel Schutzbach, Vice President Europe, Scandic Hotels, talks about the challenges in leadership in the hospitality business and the importance of reflection. For Michel Schutzbach LOTS® is an attitude in everyday life.

The hospitality industry differentiates itself from many other businesses in the way that it is very conservative. You have to work your way up through the system. It is also very closed and leaders are seldom picked from the outside. The hotel school prepares its students for all sections and tactical details in everyday hotel life, from room service to HR, everything but leadership. In Switzerland, where Michel Schutzbach comes from, it is a natural step after school to join the army, “to get the stripes” and the necessary connections. In the army he learned to shout at people, he says.

At one of his first jobs at a hotel in London he met the leader he wanted to be. This person was directive, everyone was afraid of him and he had everything under control. He was in charge and knew the answer to everything. This was some time ago and things have changed since then. The turning point for Michel Schutzbach was when he was confronted with LOTS®. Michel Schutzbach emphasizes the importance of leadership by objective and not leadership by activities, the importance of reflection and asking open questions. Scandic is very much influenced by LOTS® and Scandinavian Leadership. Michel Schutzbach believes in a high degree of participation and he wants all his GMs to become certified as Lotscoach®:

It’s all about the why

In Berlin Jesper Ek, Head of Sub Region Nordic at Roche Diabetes Care, presented some invaluable insightsfrom his experience as a leader (and cyclist) and emphasized the importance of an Outside-in vision and Five Aspects as a common language. The bicycle on stage was there to represent the important parts of leadership as Jesper Ek sees them.

The frame of the bike is the values, with trust, respect and fairness. The handlebar is whom we must steer towards to get to our “why”. What you are doing, based on these things, can be seen as the wheels. The seat stands for the environment at work and being happy in work and not just at work. Last but not least the momentum of the bike stands for focus and makingsure you focus right.

It all starts with people and engagement, Jesper Ek, says. Not only is it important to make sure we have the right parts on the bike. It is also important to make sure your team is eager to move in the same direction. This was a challenge Jesper Ek took on when he took over at Roche and managed to turn a team facing large challenges into one of the most motivated teams making profits that exceeded any expectations:

Hans Akerblom's interest in leadership was established early in his career.
