Provocation of the month:

”We do not learn from our history – we don't know it well enough.”

Creating our future
We have such a focus today on creating our future that we tend to forget what we and our predecessors have experienced and learned. We keep forgetting to ask ourselves the very important question “What insights have we gained?” Some of the stress we experience today comes out of the fact that we do not relate our everyday reality to our past. Without knowing our history and learning from it, we will not be able to move forward in a co-creative way , for us all, and make our world a little bit better place for us and coming generations.

What insights have we gained from previous generations?
We need to realize that we are all a part of a never ending process and that we have just stepped into it for some decades. This goes for our private as well as professional life. This process has been there for such a long time and will most likely be there for even longer. What is our role then on this never ending journey? Independently of how we define our role we will become more successful in what we do when we understand and respect our history and learn from it. We also need to understand and respect our present situation, here and now, and try to understand and respect what the future will bring.

What insights have we had in our private and professional life? How free and conscious are we in our conclusions? What was the life that your great, great grandmother or grandfather lived? What are their messages to us today? You might say that they would not understand our world of today. I think they would. They probably would have very clear messages or experiences to share with us, even if they do not understand some of our technological breakthroughs and that there are many more people today. They will most likely have view points on what is important in life, stress, environment/nature, children, grandchildren, and much more. How well do we know our history and how much do we learn from it? What insights have we gained?

Write down three insights you have gained from previous generations and what impact these insights have on your behaviors and attitudes today.

What insights have we gained in our own private and professional life?
Learning takes place over generations and goes on forever. We are a part of that never ending process. That is why we also need to reflect on our own insights that we have gained so far in our life and what impact these insights have or ought to have on our behaviors and attitudes today. So besides learning from previous generations we need to learn from the experiences of our own generation. All this in order to make our own, others and coming generations everyday life a little bit better all the time.

Write down three insights you have gained in your own life and what impact these insights have or should have on your behaviors and attitudes today.

Reflections on our and our ancestors’ history and insights
We feel we are in a very stressful situation today and may not take the necessary time for reflection on our own and our predessors’ history and experiences and learn from it to get new insights and thereby increase our consciousness. I hope this reflection letter will lead to that you inspire yourself to take some time for reflection, either on your own or together with your family, friends and colleagues.
